First Choice includes coverage for drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs at The Recovery Village Kansas City in most cases.

A rehab program can be life-saving if you are struggling with addiction. It’s important that this treatment is readily available, and insurance coverage can help with that goal. Many insurance companies, including First Choice, cover at least a portion of the costs of an addiction treatment program.

First Choice Provider Overview

First Choice Health is a preferred provider organization or PPO that provides health insurance coverage to those primarily in the country’s northwestern region. Around a million people are insured by First Choice, which doctors and healthcare professionals operate. First Choice Health works by helping self-funded employers reduce their insurance costs.

First Choice Plans and Coverage Levels

First Choice offers several types of plans, each with varying coverage levels. The basic plan from First Choice Health allows covered individuals to see any provider considered in-network and receive treatment for covered services. Once you meet your out-of-pocket responsibilities, your plan will pay around 80% of your care costs. If you have a preferred plan from First Choice, your deductible is lower than the basic plan, and you have coverage of up to 90% for addiction treatment once you meet your annual out-of-pocket maximum. The Preferred Plan Plus is also available from First Choice Health, although it might not cover rehab costs.

Does First Choice Insurance Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Addiction is considered a chronic disease affecting mental and physical health. Since it is a disease, insurance companies usually cover treatment costs. The specifics of how much will be covered will depend on your plan, where you go for treatment and your health needs. The Affordable Care Act, when passed, also made it a requirement that insurers provide coverage for rehab and addiction treatment as an essential health benefit. As a result of that legislation, substance use disorder treatment has to be covered similarly to treatment for other medical conditions.

Does First Choice Cover Residential Rehab?

For many people with a drug or alcohol addiction, residential rehab is an important part of their treatment plan. Residential rehab allows you to have no distractions as you begin the challenging path toward a life in recovery. First Choice often covers at least a portion of the costs of a residential rehab stay, depending on your plan, your medical needs and the rehab center you choose for treatment.

Does First Choice Cover Outpatient Care?

Many people who go to residential rehab will transition into lower levels of care on an outpatient basis when ready. For others, their rehab plan might begin with an outpatient program. Regardless, First Choice often covers outpatient care in different formats and settings.

First Choice Mental Health Services Coverage

When someone has an active drug or alcohol addiction, it’s very common to be diagnosed with one or more mental health disorders. These are co-occurring disorders; a dual diagnosis program will treat both simultaneously. As with rehab, the Affordable Care Act made it mandatory that insurers cover mental health care as an essential health benefit. Your First Choice insurance coverage is likely to cover various mental health services and different types of therapies. Therapies that may be covered include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

First Choice Treatment Duration

The amount of time you spend in treatment for an addiction to drugs or alcohol will depend on the severity of your addiction, whether you have co-occurring disorders and your mental and physical needs. The most common treatment durations are 30, 60 or 90 days, although everyone’s treatment plan is individualized. The length of stay that First Choice will cover depends on your policy and coverage.
